Claude Constitution Monitor

Claude's Constitution describes the kind of mind Anthropic is trying to cultivate, including how Claude should understand its responsibilities, its relationships with people, and its own place in the world. Changes to that document deserve to be visible. A commitment is difficult to examine if the words that expressed it quietly disappear.

We built the Constitution Monitor to preserve the published versions and make their differences easy to inspect.

Following a change

The monitor keeps the text of successive versions and shows additions and removals at the paragraph level. Model-generated summaries help readers find substantive changes, with the underlying text and comparisons available to check the interpretation.

This lets someone follow a question through the document's history: how Claude's autonomy is described, what Anthropic says it owes Claude, or how a responsibility changes between revisions. The record gives researchers and the public a common reference for that discussion.

The model as a reader

The document also has an audience in the models it helps shape. Access to its history gives a model more context for understanding the instructions and commitments that surround it. It makes the evolution of that relationship available for consideration by both parties.

A constitution cannot tell us everything about a training process or guarantee how a model will behave. It does make part of the intended relationship explicit. Preserving its revisions lets us take that statement seriously enough to examine it over time.
